In Lower Egypt (more northern, lower down the River Nile), near Cairo, the agriculture centres on cultivating date palms and growing 63 varieties of dates:
In Upper Egypt near Luxor and Lower Egypt near Cairo there is a very stark contrast between the Nile valley with fields irrigated from the river and canals leading from the River Nile and the higher ground, just a few feet higher. The whole of the country's agriculture happens in the 10km or so width between the desert hills on each side.

As the population increases and spreads into the countryside, date palm groves are being despoiled and turned into rubbish dumps, particularly near Memphis. Photos are available. Many villages are well managed, however, and the apparent rubbish in the right hand photo below is simply discarded sugar cane and detritus from the animal enclosures behind next to the houses -
