An entrance hall enters into the courtyard, there are three double bedrooms at ground floor level as well as a shower room and bathroom both with their own lavatories. Only a small part of the courtyard is shown here. The table in the courtyard is a pleasant spot for guests to have breakfast or to gather ones thoughts, check out the guide books or puruse bargains found in the souk. Cool in the summer, a mass of flowering shrubs rises above it.

Looking down from the roof terrace into the courtyard, the bouganvillia has grown a lot over the years and has now grown over one wall and is rapidly spreading over the others.

Bouganvillia in Marrakesh

Little birds ( swifts etc) nest in the eaves.

The first floor of the court yard is surrounded by colonnaded galleries.

From the entrance hall a flight of stairs leads to the second floor and enters a colonnaded loggia where can be found a small dining table and other furniture in "conservatory" style as well as a splendid pair of large copper candle sticks which when lit of an evening casts a romantic glow across the courtyard. It's furnished with a comfortable armchair and a small table, perfect for breakfast or light meal, observing the occasional shower or just reading and listening to the birds twittering in the bouganvillia.

The little room at the end, opens into a larger small study library adjacent to a salon which contains the television. as well as a good collection of books. From here a staircase leads up to the roof terrace.

Finally another flight of stairs takes one up to the large roof terrace. The terrace which is full of flowering shrubs bougainvillaea, hibiscus, jasmine, plumbago, etc., has a beautiful outlook over the old city towards the 11th century Koutoubia Mosque in one direction

and the magnificent panorama of the High Atlas Mountains, snow covered in winter and spring, in the other direction, and a very pretty local view of the palace roof tops and mosques in the very near vicinity.

This is just a corner of the large roof terrace. The flowering shrubs - Jasmine, Bouganvillia, Hibiscus, Plumbago, have all grown a great deal since this photo was taken. The terrace has a large table which can sit eight people, Zara, the house keeper and Hashmae, the house man are very happy to serve meals on this lovely terrace, which can be lit at night by electric lights in dramatic lanterns.

The whole house is lit at night by lights in beautiful and traditional Moroccan lanterns, which can be complimented by candles in the numerous candlesticks placed around the house.

On the other side of the house is to be found the glory of this house - a suite of three inter-connecting rooms with splendid 19th century painted ceilings and doors.

The suite of grand rooms is of some historic interest, the house having been part of a small palace belonging to a high court official in the 19th century. A great deal of interest has been shown in the preservation and conservation of these rooms, which is being assured by the present owner.

A view across two of the three historic rooms which span one side of the house. With a high headroom, these beautiful rooms have an atmosphere of past times in Morocco, and are furnished with a mixture of European and Moroccan antiques. The table in the center room makes an ideal dining table for either lunch or dinner. During the day the stained glass dome casts numerous coloured lights across the walls of this room and by night this room is spectacularly lit with many candles. Each of the rooms has a very high headroom and the central hall has an octagonal cupola with stained glass panels that opens on to the terrace above.

One of the 19th Century doors in the suite of three early 19th century rooms which take up one side of the house, they open from a large domed central hall ( used presently as a dining room) on one side into a comfortable salon with armchairs, large sofa and a hi-fi player and on the other to a bedroom with a bathroom on suite. Above the door can be seen the elaborate 19th century plaster work which decoraes all these rooms. The rooms also all have very beautiful old painted cedar wood ceilings.

Looking in to the central hall, used as a dining room. Although there are plenty of beautiful lamps in the house, the whole house can be most effectively lit by candle light. Here we see the top of one of two large copper candle sticks - there are several other striking antique candlesticks in the house. Through the painted doors are two rooms:

one is drawing room - furnished with silk covered cushion filled, divan and comfortable arm chair and bookcases,

the other a large double bedroom with an entrance into the bathroom which takes up the fourth side of the courtyard. This has a hand basin, lavatory and a spacious shower area entered through a pretty Moroccan archway. This room can also be entered through the courtyard gallery.

Each bedroom is furnished with a double bed and with a sitting room area with divans which can be used as single beds for extra guests particularly children. The largest bedroom ends in a old wood panelled wall painted in the traditional Moroccean style. Part of the wood panneling is a door which enters into a domed en suite bathroom and lavatory.

Moroccan bathroom

A bathroom en suite to one of the ground floor bedrooms. Difficult to photograph, the picture shows the half circular sunken bath and the hand basin. This domed bathroom also has a lavatory and has been built in traditional Marrakechi tadalekt. There are two other shower rooms, both with lavatory and hand basin, in the house - also in tadalakt.

This is a picture of the balcony found on the second floor of the house. The balcony looks across to sitting room which contains a satelite television,VCR and CD player. Adjoining this room can be found an ever filling small library which can act as the perfect study if any work is to be done.

Location

The house is in the old city, or medina - a five minute walk from the Place Jemma El Fna, and down one of the many picturesque medina alleyways known as derbs. It is very close to several of the more significant historic sites, being in the same lane as Dar Sidi Said and not far from the Bahai Palace, the palaces of a 19th century Grand Vizier and his brother. Also not far from the house are the Saadian tombs and the El Bhadi Palace, two of the principal sights of Marrakech.
Marrakesh Street scene

The ancient medinas of Morrocean cities are full of twisting alley ways often spanned by arches containing rooms from which glimpses of beatiful interiors can sometimes be seen. The lanes and streets around the house are full of fascinating shops and bazaars atmospheric cafes, tantalising glimpses of palm tree filled courtyards, horse drawn carriages, street markets and all the general bustle and colour of the medina. The house itself however is an oasis of tranquillity.

Other Arrangements

All domestic work, the cooking and laundry is undertaken by Zara, the friendly and pleasant housekeeper. Also provided at a modest extra cost, are the services of Hashmae who is an efficient and reliable houseman. He will meet guests at the airport, train station or other rendezvous and take them to the house and will continue, if required to act as a guide to Marrakech and, as a general factotum.

Weather

Usually pleasantly sunny during winter months, upper 70s during the Spring and although hot in the summer it's a very pleasant dry heat - the house itself is delightfully cool.

Swimming pools

There are several very agreeable hotewls nearby that allow guests at the house to use their pools.
